CSIC-ICB scientific article, as part of BlackCycle project, has been accepted – November 2023

CSIC-ICB last scientific article on tyre pyrolysis oil distillation has been published in open-access !

One of BlackCycle academic partner, CSIC-ICB, successfully wrote the article entitled « Design and operation of a packed pilot scale distillation column for tyre pyrolysis oil: Towards the recovery of value-added raw materials ». The article has been published in open access in FUEL journal, volume 358, Part B, 15 February 2024, 130266.

The “Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB)” was established in Zaragoza in 1948 as part of the “Instituto Nacional del Combustible” (National Fuel Agency). Today, the centre is part of the “Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)” (Spanish National Research Council), and is organized into two departments:

  1. Energy and Environment
  2. Chemical Processes and Nanotechnology, which carried out research activities in CO2 capture, air pollution, waste recovery, thermochemical processes, alternative fuels, nanoscience, nanotechnology, new sensor, fuel cell, batteries and superconductor materials, among others.

You’ll find their work highlighting the main features of the design and operation of a pilot-scale distillation column for the recovery of value-added products from tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO), as part of the BLACKCYCLE project.

The distillation unit was designed using heuristic engineering rules, simulated distillation data (SimDist) and Aspen Hysys ® modeling.
Commissioning and the results of long-term experimental campaigns for validation purposes are also presented.

The key results obtained here should give an exceptional boost to the circular economy of complex streams such as end-of-life tyres by combining pyrolysis and distillation technologies.
